In this election year, it is more important than ever that we have a reasoned debate about our energy future. Political sound bites now need to make way for pragmatic policy - and this vital survey will allow the industry to outline exactly what it needs to see from our policy makers.
Our planning system is in urgent need of reform, our grid infrastructure requires enormous sums of investment to meet the needs of tomorrow. We need a progressive tax regime which encourages energy firms to invest in the UKCS and in renewables. And we need to find a way to move at greater pace.
All these issues, and many more, will be covered in the Energy Transition 39 survey – in partnership with KPMG and Energy Transition Zone Ltd.
The survey has become established as a vital source of industry intelligence for businesses, policy makers and the media and enables the Chamber to set out the practical challenges faced by the sector and ensure conversations about the necessary policy interventions are taking place. See previous survey reports and reaction here: AGCC Energy Transition Survey Reports.
The Autumn 2023 report showed that confidence in the North Sea remains very low with many respondents now focusing on overseas markets and opportunities. EPL and negative rhetoric from all corners of the political spectrum are at the heart of this. It also highlighted the damage being done by a topic of such national importance being used as a political football, suggesting that we should consider the creation of a new body, independent of Government responsible for a multi decade strategy to deliver a successful energy transition. A ‘Bank of England for energy’. And we continue to see worrying workforce trends which may impact our ability to take advantage of the new and renewable energy opportunities in front of us.
Is your business involved in energy operations in the UKCS and/or further afield? What does the short and longer term hold for your company right now? Your feedback will be instrumental in helping us to ensure that the industry’s voice is heard.
