Teams of Robert Gordon University (RGU) students have been sharing their expertise with a global energy company.
MSc Energy Management students from RGU’s Aberdeen Business School have recently embarked on two projects working with Wood Group PLC.
The Smart Energy Technologies project was commissioned by Wood Group PLC to identify and assess the business opportunities to rapidly deploy clean and innovative energy services, with a focus on its application to off-grid, remote operations and infrastructures – such as in the mining and oil and gas industries. The project delivered a detailed technology and market analysis outlining the level of activity, type of operation and specific energy requirements in identified locations.
Wood Group PLC aims to grow its clean energy business by providing smart technical solutions which create and sustain value for these operations in terms of reliable, automated and low cost energy services.
The second project focussed on assessing the competitive landscape and emerging technologies for monitoring and inspection of oil field assets, in a bid to identify potential commercial innovative solutions that overcome technical challenges.
Dr Abhishek Agarwal, senior lecturer in Strategy and Policy at ABS, takes the lead in securing and coordinating consultancy projects for the MSc Energy Management programme.
Dr Agarwal said: “The projects sponsored by Wood Group offer our students an opportunity to be mentored by senior executives and address a real industry issue.”
“We use an innovative model of team working that results in a wide ranging learning for students and at the same time delivering significant value for the client; ensuring win-win for all parties involved.”
Martyn Link, Group Head of Strategic Analysis & Planning at Wood Group said: “These were two challenging projects to deliver in both the scope and the timelines, the two teams did a great job in wrestling with some complex analysis to deliver thought provoking recommendations”
Alan Fotheringham, President Strategy & Development at Wood Group said: “The analysis done by the students has validated and challenged aspects of our thinking around these markets – it was a valuable exercise and two great projects were delivered. Well done to all involved.”
