A special event for parents and carers of young people planning to go to university next year is being organised by experts at the University of Aberdeen.

As the prospect of university draws near for senior year secondary pupils, parents are often left wondering how best to support their children through the transition to higher education.

To help bridge this gap, the University of Aberdeen is hosting a special event for parents who may have limited experience with university life, offering valuable insights and guidance on how to support their children as they prepare for their next steps.

Whether parents have never attended university themselves or simply want to better understand how they can assist their children during this critical time, this event promises to equip them with practical advice and signpost relevant resources.

The evening will be hosted by Vice-Principal – Education at the University of Aberdeen, Professor Jo-Anne Murray and will consist of presentations advice from university staff as well as a Q&A panel featuring experts from across the institution.

Professor Murray said: “As well as working with thousands of students on day-to-day basis, many who have just taken their first steps into higher education as part of my day job, I am also a mother who has only recently seen my own child go off to university, so I know how stressful an experience it can be for mums, dads and carers!

“Many parents may feel uncertain about how the university system works or how to offer the right support to their children in the last few years of secondary school to prepare them for their next step.

“This event aims to demystify the process and empower parents with knowledge on everything from financing university education to understanding the emotional and academic challenges students face. We hope those will leave with a clear understanding of how to foster resilience and readiness in their children as they take this major step.”

More than 300 people have already registered to attend the event which is open to all parents and carers and may be of particular interest to families with less experience of universities.
