The public will have the opportunity to find out what is happening in the world of dementia research in an informal discussion held at the University of Aberdeen tomorrow (Wednesday September 14).
Professor Bettina Platt, Chair in Translational Neuroscience and Dr Alasdair Lawrie, Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry in NHS Grampian will discuss the latest research in the ‘Dementia: Facts and Myth’ event as part of Techfest 2016.
Professor Platt said: “Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are a major unresolved health concern for our society, yet surrounded by misconceptions and hampered by unsuccessful drug discovery programs.
“I am mostly going to cover causes (especially lifestyle related risk factors) and diagnosis, as well as briefly talk about recent therapeutic developments.
“Particularly, I am planning to tackle some of the controversies surrounding genetics, and miracle cures often reported in the news.”
Dr Alasdair Lawrie will talk about NHS services for people affected by dementia, and resources available within Aberdeen, for example from the Dementia Resource Centre, will be discussed.
Professor Platt and Dr Lawrie are happy to answer questions emailed to them in advance (b.platt@abdn.ac.uk)
This event is part of Techfest 2016 and will be held in the Fraser Noble Building, University of Aberdeen on Wednesday September 14 from 7pm. Admission is £5/£4 concession.
