Aberdeen-based cutting specialists CUT represented Scotland at the EXA - Energy Exchange 2025 event in Perth Australia last week, where they also spoke at the Scottish Development International panel.

This event follows the recent news that Australia and the United Kingdom have signed a partnership agreement to strengthen cooperation on offshore oil and gas decommissioning. This new agreement will match 40 years of UK expertise in the North Sea with a burgeoning decommissioning services market in Australia.

Bruce Sinclair, CUT business development manager said “CUT are UK-based diamond wire cutting specialists and for over 40 years have been involved in most of the world’s decommissioning projects. We are exactly the type of experienced supplier that is critical to safe, efficient and cost-effective decom operations, and the Australian market is already benefitting from our service. We’ve completed major decom projects for four clients in Australia in the last couple of years and will complete another this year. Southeast Asia and Australia projects are supported via our Singapore base.”

Australia has tight safety and environmental regulations for decom work. Bruce Sinclair added “Following a near miss incident in 2021, the Government of Western Australia contacted CUT to ask how we would have completed a particular project. They visited us and, shortly after that, released a paper recommending the use of our patented solutions. We offer the market a number of unique solutions, from our range of machines that can cut up to 8m targets, to our patented castellated/step cutting solution, and our unique high performance diamond wire. Our cutting service is also ideal for the renewables market, whether that is cutting cable protection systems for maintenance or cutting wind farm monopiles during decommissioning”.

Bruce Sinclair and Tiziana Marras (CUT General Manager) enjoyed a productive and rewarding week in Perth meeting existing clients, new opportunities, and networking. The Scottish Development International delegation allowed Scottish companies such as CUT, Rotech, Motive and Mocean to highlight the vast experience, knowledge and technical solutions that the Australian decom market can tap into. Oil and gas decommissioning in Australia is expected to require a $40bn spend over the next three decades with a large proportion being spent in the next ten years.
