Consortiq, working with an aviation division of one of North America's biggest oil and gas companies, has developed a drone safety course to mitigate risks from uncontrolled drone use.

The course aims to educate drone pilots on flying safely around oil and gas infrastructure.

Consortiq, identified uncontrolled and unapproved drone use risks across sites and rights-of-way. These risks included impacts to infrastructure, other parties, and crewed aviation operations. In response, Consortiq developed a comprehensive drone safety and awareness course to educate drone pilots on flying safely around oil and gas infrastructure.

The course covers topics including:

• Regulations around drone use near critical infrastructure
• Potential hazards from drone use and collisions
• Best practices for flying drones safely and legally
• Emergency response procedures in the event of a drone incident

By providing this education and awareness, the goal of the course is to mitigate the risks of uncontrolled drone use and enable safe coexistence of drones and oil and gas operations. The course was so successful in the US the client asked for the course to be developed for their sites in Canada, where it is now being delivered, following Transport Canada Regulations.
