Aberdeen City Council has implemented a busking code of conduct for the city centre.
Councillors from the Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee heard an update on work being carried out by the Community Safety Partnership to establish a busking code of conduct.
An online consultation took place earlier this year, which found that many respondents supported the cultural vibrancy busking brings to the city centre whilst advocating for clear guidelines and enforcement to ensure harmony.
A motion on a proposed busking code of conduct was brought to Committee by Councillor Sandra Macdonald in November 2023.
Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee Convener Councillor Miranda Radley said: “Street performances are a great way for local performers to showcase their talent and add to Aberdeen’s cultural vibrancy.
“I am pleased that a code of conduct for busking will be implemented in the city centre to ensure that busking can continue in way that is respectful to local residents and businesses.”
Vice-convener Councillor Dell Henrickson said: “Busking can bring a wonderful environment and liven up the city centre. Several cities across Scotland have already implemented similar codes of conduct and we thank everyone who took part and had their say in creating these new guidelines.”
Following from the consultation, the code of conduct will be run from Sundays to Thursdays from 10am to 8pm, and Friday to Saturday from 10am to 9pm.
The hours on Fridays and Saturdays aims to support Aberdeen’s vibrant night time economy whilst respecting the earlier weekday times for local residents.
