More than 500 walkers from across the North-east will step out in support of a leading cancer charity this weekend in Aberdeen.
CLAN Cancer Support’s annual Landmark Walk event takes place on Sunday (September 27) and will see participants tackle either a 7.8 mile or 13 mile route around the city.
Starting from Westburn Park at 9am, near the charity’s CLAN House headquarters, both routes take in a number of prominent features throughout the Granite City.
From King’s College and St Machar Cathedral to Marischal College, Duthie Park and the Beach Ballroom, the streets will be filled with a sea of purple as participants aim to complete the course.
Alongside the walk, the popular park will be transformed into an event village where family and friends will be able to enjoy a range of entertainment including an inflatable assault course, surf simulator, face painting, tea cup rides and more. Music will be provided by the Guarana Street Drummers and a selection of food and drinks will also be available.
CLAN will call on the help of over 300 volunteers who will be involved throughout the day marshalling the event. The charity has been inundated with offers from individuals, clubs and groups who will come together to provide a vital support that allows the fundraiser to take place. Law firm Bond Dickinson has also returned for the third year in a row as the walk’s headline sponsor.
All funds raised from the day will go towards CLAN’s provision of free support services to anyone affected by cancer throughout north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. Last year’s walk raised an impressive £43,000 for the charity.
Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said: “The participant packs are being made and the signs are being put up as preparations for Sunday’s walk gather pace; we are really looking forward to what promises to be our biggest and best Landmark Walk yet.
“Participants are coming from far and wide. Some have been affected by cancer directly, some have family and friends that have been affected whilst some simply want to take part in support of CLAN and the work it does across the north and north-east of Scotland. We are always taken aback by the level of support shown both by individuals and the business community towards our events and this year’s walk is no different.
“On the day itself, there will be an event village within Westburn Park itself where families and friends will be able to come down and cheer participants on, whilst enjoying a range of family fun activities and games. There really will be something for everyone.
“The event is of course all about having fun whilst raising both funds and awareness for CLAN. Each participant will be resplendent in their purple t-shirt so if you do see someone taking part on Sunday, please give them a cheer for their efforts. Their help and commitment to CLAN makes a massive difference to many people affected by cancer across the region.
CLAN’s Landmark Walk takes place on Sunday, September 27, with walkers leaving in groups from Westburn Park from 9am onwards. The event village will run from 9am to 5pm within Westburn Park.
