70 staff and care workers in Aberdeen City Council’s children’s services workforce are undergoing new training in therapeutic interventions to help children and young people as part of a £100k funding boost.

The workers have been taking part in theraplay skills training which will better develop skills across the service in helping engage with city youngsters who have had adverse experiences.

Councillor John Wheeler, education operational delivery convener, who helped secure the additional funding for staff development paid a visit today to see how the training was progressing.

Councillor Wheeler said: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have been able to identify and secure such a significant sum; part of which is to help develop our workforce to help ensure better outcomes for our children and young people.

“In developing these skills we are raising the bar in tackling the important issue of young people’s mental health and wellbeing which is a huge priority for us.”

The training will assist staff to help youngsters build self-esteem and trust in others through sessions which create an emotional connection between the child and carer".
