Choose Your Energy: RGU Fashion students showcase Aberdeen’s energy industry in new digital film

Aberdeen fashion students have created a digital fashion film which encompasses and reflects the evolving oil and gas industry the city is known for.

Fashion management students from Robert Gordon University (RGU) have embraced the challenge of creating their first digital fashion film as part of their third year project with the theme of ‘Northern Culture’.

Fashion shoots have taken place to showcase the energy industry within Aberdeen encompassing the looks of wind, solar, oil, gas and water.

These shoots have taken place in studios and on location settings around Aberdeen and are being edited to create an impactful and energetic fashion film, which is being launched on Thursday May 5 at 6.30pm at RGU’s Aberdeen Business School.

The event, which will include an exhibition and a presentation from the students, will showcase the hard work and efforts of the Fashion Management team, as well as those who worked on make-up, hair, clothing, music and modelling.

Nichola Strachan, lecturer of fashion management at RGU’s Aberdeen Business School, said: “This is the first time that the fashion management students have been tasked with creating a film rather than a real life Fashion Catwalk. This has given the students the opportunity to throw themselves into the media and more digital aspects of the creative industry.”

Creative director of the project and third year student Courtney Williams said:

“The idea behind such a creative direction within the film rather than an online catwalk is to campaign the influence of oil and gas within the Northern landscape and also highlight the talent that Aberdeen and surrounding areas have to showcase.

“The film would not have been possible without the help from RGU’s creative team which has helped our initial idea come to life.

“The digital aspect of this project has really inspired me and is great experience for our course and future job prospects.”

An RGU Gray’s School of Art graduate, designer Erika Doy, showcases her stunning intricate design for a water inspired shoot. London designer Jay Spooner (Digby Jackson) inspired the garmets for wind, as well as added gusts of flare with accessories to all shoots. John Lewis and New Look also provided clothing for the other shoots and the music was created by Matthew Stone who has previously worked on music for designers.
