Are you the North-east’s next top model?
Charity Friends of ANCHOR is looking for men and women from across the region to take part in its iconic Brave and Courage on the Catwalk fashion shows.
The shows star locals who have been through, or are going through, a cancer or haematology diagnosis.
The selected models will take to the catwalk at P&J Live in May, showing off an array of casual, formal and occasionwear provided by local retailers.
But the shows are about much more than fashion. Instead they are a celebration of each individual model and the groups they represent, giving them the opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy a life-changing experience together.
The events have become Friends of ANCHOR’s two biggest fundraising activities of the year – raising more than £2million to support patients with cancer or a blood disorder.
Sarah-Jane Hogg, chief executive of the charity, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that we hit such a significant milestone at this year’s shows.
“We moved from the Beach Ballroom to P&J Live, where we were able to welcome more guests than ever before, while maintaining the inspiring, intimate feel the events are known for.
“Preparations for 2025’s shows are well under way, and we can’t wait to start seeing applications come in. Brave and Courage on the Catwalk are truly unique, and we’d encourage anyone considering putting themselves forward to take the plunge.
“From the first time you meet and those first nervous rehearsals to your final bow on the catwalk, you’ll never forget the experience. It’s a chance to meet like-minded people, share your story, build up your confidence and make some incredible memories.”
Every penny raised through the shows goes towards supporting the wellbeing of ANCHOR patients – from offering complementary therapies and handing out care packs – and investing in research and equipment to ensure Grampian remains at the forefront of cancer care. The charity also funds staff development opportunities.
All Brave and Courage models must be aged 16 or over, have had a cancer or haematology diagnosis, and be from Grampian, Orkney or Shetland.
The selected models will be professionally styled and trained by model agency Premiere Productions UK.
Hugh and Ann Sutherland became Friends of ANCHOR’s first couple to take part in the shows this year.
The couple, from Meikle Wartle, near Inverurie, described the experience as “surreal” and encouraged people to pop in an application for 2025.
Retired helicopter pilot Hugh, 68, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2022 and underwent major surgery and chemotherapy.
Ten weeks after the surgery, he was told he was cancer free. But the family were then dealt another blow when Ann was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly afterwards.
Together, the couple and their children navigated their treatment and recovery and now both cancer-free, decided they wanted to give back to Friends of ANCHOR by taking part in Brave and Courage.
Hugh, who lost three stone and had to use a feeding tube for several months, said: “To anyone thinking of applying for the 2025 shows, go for it. It’s the most rewarding thing you can do post-cancer.
“It took me out of my comfort zone for sure and helped me build my confidence.
“Getting to know everyone at rehearsals was amazing and there are no words to describe the tension and excitement as we waited before going on the stage at P&J Live. Going up onto the stage was surreal and out of this world – you just wanted it to last forever.
“Brave gave me some of my old sparkle back – it really boosts your self-esteem. Where else would you get 23 therapists that have also been through a cancer diagnosis that you can share stories with and get 24/7 support from?”
Ann echoed her husband’s thoughts, and highlighted the close bond she’s now got with her “amazing Courage sisters”.
“We were all unsure and nervous to begin with, but ended up having the best time ever. There’s such a bond between us now and we’ve made friends for life.
“I wanted to take part in Courage to give something back as I knew it was an important fundraising opportunity for Friends of ANCHOR but it’s so much more than that and I got far more back in return – what a privilege.”
Brave will take place at P&J Live on May 8 and 9, followed by the two Courage shows on May 10 and 11.
Tickets are on sale now for Brave. A waiting list is in operation for Courage on the Catwalk.
As well as the chance to cheer on the models, attendees will enjoy a two-course dinner and musical entertainment throughout the evening. There will also be raffles and an auction, with event sponsorship ensuring every penny of fundraising directly benefits local patients.
To apply to be in the 2025 line-up, download an application form from the Friends of ANCHOR website, email info@friendsofanchor.org or call 01224 859136. Application packs are also available from the ANCHOR Unit.
