Celebrity chef judges help Maggie’s Centre Aberdeen raise some dough in charity’s first ‘Kitchen Table Day’ events

Maggie’s Aberdeen, celebrated its first ever ‘Kitchen Table Day’ on Friday (February 26) by holding a ‘Great British Bake Off’ style event, complete with celebrity chef judges.

Brian McLeish, Professional Masterchef runner up and head chef at Moonfish Cafe in the city, was joined by The Kilted Chef, Craig Wilson, owner of Eat on the Green in Udny to determine Aberdeen’s best baker. The event raised around £300 for Maggie’s Aberdeen and was won by Elma Wood of Aberdeen.

Mr McLeish said the competition was very close: “There was a huge amount of creativity on show today, however but Elma just pipped the competition to the post thanks to her brilliant shortbread.

“The idea behind Maggie’s Kitchen Table Day is to encourage people to come together, have fun and raise the funds that keep each of these centres operational. It’s been fantastic to be part of today’s event, it just goes to show that there are some seriously talented bakers here in the North-east.”

Susan Sutherland, Aberdeen centre head, also praised the generosity of supporters in the area: “This is the first year of the Kitchen Table Day campaign and we’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response from the public this week. We know there have been around 50 events in Aberdeen area alone, and there are still more to come over the next few days.

“We’re still counting up totals raised but there’s no doubt that the people of Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire have been very creative with their fundraising events. We’ve also had supporters hosting their events from Orkney all the way down to London. There’s been a wide range of things going on, including corporate lunch and learns all the way through to games nights, all being harnessed to raise money. We now just can’t wait until the event runs again next year.”

Aberdeen Football Club, hotelier Stewart Spence and golfer Colin Montgomerie have all shown their support towards the Maggie’s Aberdeen Kitchen Table Day this week. The idea behind the campaign arose due to the kitchen table being seen as ‘the heart’ of each of the eight Maggie’s Centres in Scotland.

Maggie’s relies entirely on the generosity and support of the local community to raise funds needed to provide our unique programme of support to the people of Aberdeen and beyond affected by cancer.

Maggie’s is funded only by public donations and its costs £500,000 to run each centre for one year.
