Mark Carney has won the race to become Canada's next prime minister - and has vowed to win the trade war with his US counterpart Donald Trump.

Carney, former governor of the Canadian central bank and Bank of England, made the comments during his victory speech.

It comes after Trump imposed various tariffs on Canada and said he wanted to make the country the 51st US state.

Carney, the BBC reports, said: "Americans should make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win."

He also branded Trump's tariffs "unjustified", saying he was "attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses".

Carney confirmed Canada's retaliatory tariffs on US imports "until the Americans show us respect".
