Tipped as “a rising star in Scotland's traditional music scene”, Calum McIlroy will be performing at Aberdeen Arts Centre on Saturday, October 19 at 7.30pm with Signy Jakobsdottir on Percussion and Rory Matheson on Piano.
Winner of BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2024, Calum is a guitarist, mandolin player, and singer from Aberdeenshire.
Amy Liptrott, Director of Aberdeen Arts Centre, said: “Calum is a brilliant talent, and I’m really excited he’ll be playing with his band on our main stage. The North East has nurtured and inspired so much creativity and it’s always a joy to welcome home-grown talent back to our stage. It promises to be a very special evening, not least for Calum himself!”
The former Westhill Academy pupil taught himself music then learned with a teacher online before moving to Glasgow to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. After graduating with a BMus in Traditional Music he released his debut EP, This Ill Deeds (2020), and was nominated for the Citty Finlayson Scots Singer of the Year Award at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards. As well as performing in a trio he has appeared alongside the likes of Ross Ainslie & Ali Hutton and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Calum said: “I’m delighted to be bringing my band to Aberdeen Arts Centre in October! It’s fantastic to be given the opportunity to share my music with a North-east audience, and to do so in a venue as renowned as Aberdeen Arts Centre, where I played as a teenager, is even more special!”
