SAC Consulting Food and Drink has welcomed Calum Johnston to the team – bringing with him commercial farm business and food processing experience within the potato industry.
Calum previously worked as a potato trader with one of the UK’s leading potato wholesalers, Branston Ltd, supplying Tesco and Booker. During his time at Branston, Calum had a number of responsibilities including; procurement, agronomy, logistics, customer and supplier relationships. Calum is qualified under the Tesco Food Manufacturing Standard (TFMS) - a required benchmark for all food and drink related companies who supply products, ingredients or packaging materials to Tesco supermarkets. Alongside procuring ware potatoes for packing, Calum managed the supply of secondary (out grade) potatoes for processing to meet increasing demand in the convenience market. This increased business profitability and helped to reduce food waste.
Calum is by no means a new member of the SRUC community. He studied for four years in Aberdeen and successfully achieved a 1st Class BA (Hons) degree in Rural Business Management specialising in Agri-Food. Calum also represented SRUC at the prestigious Oxford Farming Conference in January 2016.
Calum has a practical agricultural background growing up and living on an arable and sheep farm, and now helps out with a diversified horse livery enterprise based in Perthshire. Away from work, Calum’s interests lie in sport and music. As a junior, he represented Scotland playing squash on an International stage and now concentrates his efforts as a semi-professional musician playing the fiddle in ceilidh bands across Scotland.
