Call for entries for open air photography exhibition

Photographers at all levels and stages of interest are being invited to submit their entries to be a part of a prominent open air exhibition in Aberdeen city centre later this year.

The Open Call, which invites entrants to submit photos exploring the theme of ‘The Experience of North’, is being held as part of Develop North, a major new photographic festival launched by Gray’s School of Art.

The entries will be judged by a panel of professionals from Gray’s School of Art, with selected work being screened on the opening night of Develop North, which runs over October 2 and 3 at Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Garthdee Campus.

The photographs will then be printed by Metro Imaging in London before going on display in the centre of Aberdeen later in the year.

Head of Gray’s School of Art, Professor Chris O’Neil, said: “This is a great opportunity for anybody with a passion for photography. We want to celebrate the best of the region’s photographers with a display in the very heart of Aberdeen.

“We are looking for submissions that examine ‘The Experience of North’. This may be a response to current political, social or cultural landscapes, or perhaps a poetic, conceptual or critical perception of what it is to experience the ‘North’. All interpretations are valid.

“Through photography, we are looking to explore an intrinsic, shared understanding of the qualities of northerly life. Therefore imagery from other northerly countries that share in this unique understanding of northern environments, are also valid.”

Aberdeen Lord Provost, George Adam, said: “Our individual experiences influence how we view the people and places around us. This project will showcase our part of the world in many different ways and I’m sure will make people think about their surroundings in new ways.

“It will be particularly interesting to discover how people interpret our beautiful city, and I’m looking forward to seeing the exhibition.”

Up to three images per person can be submitted to info@developnorth.com with the deadline for entries being 5pm on Friday, September 25.

Develop North will feature a series of free workshops, talks, screenings and exhibitions which explore a range of critical and practical issues in contemporary photography from across Scotland and beyond.

Among the featured guests is Gray’s alumnus and Director of Metro Imaging in London Steve Macleod; photographer Jon Nicholson; 'Goose Flesh Zine' creator Sarah Amy Fishlock; and 'Document Scotland' photographers Sophie Gerrard and Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert.

More information about the open call exhibition and the Develop North schedule of events, all of which are free and open to the public, can be found at www.developnorth.com. In order to guarantee a place at one of the events, booking is essential.

Develop North has been organised by Gray’s School of Art in partnership with Metro Imaging, Street Level Photo Works, Ilford Photo and Harman Technology Ltd.
