Denis Law Legacy Trust Streetsport’s ‘Positive Destinations’ programme has been awarded the DYW Quality Accreditation at Bronze level.
Streetsport is a non-profit “prevention, intervention & diversionary tactics initiative” based at RGU Sport. In partnership with Aberdeen Asset Management & Nexen, Streetsport have created the ‘Positive Destinations’ programme which targets 16-19 year-olds in areas of deprivation in Aberdeen City.
The programme aims to make sure that each young person is given the best opportunities possible to make steps towards their dream job. ‘Positive Destinations’ is currently in its infancy stages, having run for the first time this year in Torry through a partnership with Aberdeen Asset Management.
Although this is the first year that the programme has run, all 8 participants (resulting in a 67% capacity rate) are still involved in the programme and an additional ‘Positive Destinations’ initiative launched the first week of November, involving a partnership between Northfield and Nexen. Anyone who living in the Northfield area aged between 16-19 years is eligible to apply – regardless of educational or employment status.
In exchange for taking part in the ‘Positive Destinations’ programme, participants must commit to a number of volunteer hours with The Denis Law Legacy Trust’s Streetsport programme. This is not only an opportunity for each participant to develop their CV and skills, but also to meet new people and ‘give back’ to the local community.
The DYW Quality Accreditation can be awarded at Bronze, Silver orGold Level to companies offering initiatives or programmes that encourage and improve the employment & training of young people (aged 3-24), and meet a core set of requirements to support the development of excellence in the North-east.
Rachel Elliott, manager of Developing the Young Workforce North East Scotland, said:
“We are delighted to award Streetsport with a silver accreditation award.
“Our quality framework aims to promote programmes which do good work in developing the skills and experiences of young people, which in turn will better prepare them for the world of work.
“Programmes like Streetsport play a vital role in raising the aspirations of young people and highlighting the importance of commitment, trustworthiness and having a positive attitude: all important factors in a job.”
