Brave supporters take to the sky in the name of charity

A group of intrepid thrill seekers has taken to the sky in support of a leading North-east cancer support charity.

Seventeen brave fundraisers recently completed a skydive, freefalling nearly 10,000 feet in a tandem jump to raise funds for CLAN Cancer Support.

The jump, which took place on August 17 at Fife airport, was completed by a group of individuals after being brought together by a shared desire to both help others affected by cancer and to raise funds for CLAN.

The team, which managed to raise nearly £10,000 through sponsorship, was supported through the event by First Aberdeen who provided a bus to transport them from the north-east to the airfield along with Unite the Union who supplied drivers for the vehicle.

Both were supplied completely free of charge, allowing for the majority of funds raised to go directly towards CLAN’s provision of free support services to anyone affected by cancer across the north and north-east of Scotland.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, has paid tribute to both the participants and to First Aberdeen and Unite for their support in the event.

She said: “A skydive is perhaps the ultimate fundraising challenge and we were delighted that we had so many put their name forward to jump on CLAN’s behalf – they’re certainly a brave bunch!

“The bond that brought the group together is the fact that many of them have been affected by cancer in some shape or form but they’ve managed to turn this into something positive, to help both themselves and others. For that, I really can’t thank them enough for their fantastic efforts.

“I’d also like to display my gratitude to both First Aberdeen and Unite the Union for their generous help in providing the transport for the team. To have this cost completely covered was a massive boost for the fundraising total and really highlights the support that the north-east’s business community regularly provides to charities such as CLAN.”

David Phillips, managing director of First Aberdeen, said: “CLAN Cancer Support is a fantastic charity and we were more than happy to help out with transport for their brave fundraising skydivers. Cancer affects so many of us and our families and our King Street staff were really pleased to have played their part in ensuring money raised goes directly to those affected.

“We're committed to helping and supporting our community, and by working in partnership with organisations like CLAN, we're doing what we can to help those charities on our doorstep.”
