An Aberdeenshire company has extended its portfolio of activities to now include days specially tailored for school children, with Albyn School being the first to enjoy this new offering.
BackStrong Adventures initially offered Scottish and overseas activities for adults of all abilities, and continued to work on developing something special for the younger market, to encourage them to get outdoors, have fun and see the benefits of exploring the countryside.
BackStrong Adventures founder Gillian Fowler has been working closely with the Lower 5 classes at Albyn School since autumn 2015, having enjoyed several visits as part of the school’s Extreme Environment project. As Gillian was preparing for her February 2016 Kilimanjaro trip, and had just returned from the Atlas Mountains, the children had so many great questions as they tried to imagine what it would be like to trek through mountains over a number of days, how the body deals with climate changes and in particular, how altitude affects the body.
Gillian said: “The class were very supportive of the Kilimanjaro trip and even created training plans, research about the area and then gave me the great honour of taking Mr Chimp, the class mascot, to what would be an incredible adventure! He became an integral team member, and provided much joy as everyone looked out for him every day. Getting the children engaged in such a trip and excited about exploring was special and made a huge impact to many. The BackStrong team enjoyed every minute of what was a fantastic day with the children.”
And what better way to encourage the pupils that to take them out for a special day, look at wildlife, explore paths, and enjoy some fun teambuilding. BackStrong Adventures launched their children’s activity days in May, with Albyn School’s Lower 5 pupils enjoying a fun-filled day at Loch Muick. The day proved very special for all those involved – the BackStrong team, 44 pupils, Lower 5 teachers Miss Sinclair and Miss Brown, and the parents who accompanied.
