Richard Irvin Energy Solutions is investing in the future with their new and improved Apprentice recruitment process which includes Lego based practical tasks designed to encourage collaborative working and problem-solving.

The revamped programme will ensure the Company is well placed both for business growth and to meet any skills shortages in the future. The practical group sessions encourage team work and participation, ensuring that the Company recruits the right competences, and committed individuals.

Kim Woolner HR director said: ‘These sessions have been designed to make the candidates feel at ease while simultaneously bringing out the best in them. Using tools like the Lego allows them to work with familiar products and demonstrates their team working and collaboration skills. To date, the assessment days have gone extremely well and we are in the final interview stages.

‘At Richard Irvin we believe that investing in the younger generation is essential and our Apprentice Schemes are the best mechanism available to allow us to build and develop our own internal talent, growing them into a knowledgeable, competent and motivated workforce.’

Richard Irvin is recruiting a total of 13 apprentices across various disciplines, with a team from both of our Business Units and HR working on the process. Jim Booth, from Tullos Training, has also been providing support with the development of the sessions.

This year’s Apprentice recruitment programme is part of the Press and Journals Apprentice 100 which looks to to create 100 apprenticeships in 100 days recognising that finding enough apprentices to meet demand is one of the biggest challenges facing Scottish firms.

Richard Irvin Energy Solutions believe that the investment in Apprentices will enable the business to perform better and remain competitive within its markets. In turn, this also gives the Apprentice valuable work experience, allowing them to develop their skills, knowledge and experience whilst developing their understanding of the business.

Richard Irvin Energy Solutions is one of Scotland’s largest private engineering companies. Established in 1871, the business employs approximately 450 people across Scotland providing energy solutions and services to both commercial and domestic customers through its core business units of Mechanical & Electrical Project Services, Facilities Management and Energy Management.
