Community Food Initiatives North East (CFINE) are running their annual fundraiser ‘Appetite for Change’, encouraging volunteers to live on £2 a day as part of a campaign highlighting food poverty in Aberdeen.
The challenge is running from October 14 – October, 20 with participants having only £10 to cover all food and drink over the five-day period.
CFINE has been signing up volunteers to help highlight food poverty in the city as well as raise funds for the charity.
The Lord Provost of Aberdeen Barney Crockett said: “I would encourage everyone who can to sign up for CFINE’s ‘Appetite for Change’ challenge of living on just £2 per day for five days or to donate to the campaign. By doing so you will help to raise awareness of food poverty, which is a daily struggle faced by an increasing number of families and individuals.
“All the money raised will go directly towards tackling food poverty and improving the circumstances of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the North-east.”
Since 2014, year-on-year demand for emergency food parcels has almost tripled at CFINE’s food bank. Demand continues to be high, with over 800 food parcels consistently being given out each month, showing the high levels of food insecurity in the city.
CFINE’s chief executive Dave Simmers said: “This campaign is a key fundraiser for CFINE and plays a huge part in raising awareness about food poverty. CFINE continues to see a huge increase in demand for the support and services we offer, including emergency food aid and financial support. Appetite for Change challenges participants to spend a week living on a restricted budget to represent the challenges that others in the city are facing on a day to day basis.”
