In the approach to Dementia Awareness Week (Monday, May 30 - Sunday, June 5), Alzheimer Scotland is hosting a Musical Memories coffee afternoon on Monday, May 16, attracting members of the public to visit the Care Home and see if they would be interested in becoming volunteers involved in the regular Musical Memories sessions that take place.
Examples of benefits of Musical Memories Activity are enhanced interaction, mood, appetite, exercise & breathing allowing participants to have fun in a calm and friendly group environment.
Opening up ‘Musical Memories’ sessions in care homes and sheltered housing complexes allows this shared activity to happen more often and also connect the local community to isolated and vulnerable people living in their community.
Indirectly, families and carers for people in care/sheltered homes will know that the person they care for has a meaningful and fun shared activity to enjoy with other people and also something they are welcome to join in with as well.
Bob Fenwick, manager of Angusfield Care Home said: “Musical memories has made such a huge difference to the lives of our residents, enjoying the interactive and stimulating musical sessions and we would love to recruit more volunteers to help us continue this worthwhile and meaningful activity and would welcome anyone along on 16th May.”
Session users John and Norma have said “It keeps us active and makes us happy”, also noticed that it brings closeness between people; a wife was serenading her husband while we sung “If you were the only girl in the world”.
