Air passenger duty - what do you think?

The Scottish Government recently announced that, following devolution in 2016, Air Passenger Duty will be cut by 50% by 2020.

However, the cuts will not begin to occur until 2018 and Aberdeen International Airport has called the proposed timeline “disappointing”.

The UK is currently one of only five countries in Europe that taxes passengers on departure.

While the APD raised £2.9billion for the UK budget in 2013/2014, only approximately £200million of this amount was collected in Scotland.

Scotland’s airports have consistently highlighted that the levy makes Scotland uncompetitive and have called on the Government to scrap it.

  • What are your thoughts on the proposal to slowly reduce APD?
  • What would be the effects of scrapping it, for the Scottish economy?
