Council tax in Aberdeenshire could soar by 20% to fund gritting, flood defences and bridge repairs, The Press and Journal has reported.

Local authority has launched a consultation as it prepares to have to cover an overspend of £26million when the budget is set in spring.

The P&J reports council chiefs are considering the dramatic council tax hike, as well as axing school staff, as they bid to balance the books.

And the council is turning to residents to get their take on potential money-saving moves.

Survey participants are being asked to rank services from least to most important and leave comments to provide further detail on their views.
