Aberdeen Science Centre to host meet the scientist day

Aberdeen Science Centre is to host its annual Meet the Scientist Day on November 9, when visitors will be able to find out more about the science behind healthcare.

The special day will take place during National Pathology Week, which runs from November 4 to 10 to highlight the contribution healthcare science makes to modern medical care.

There will be hands-on activities for all ages, including cholesterol checks for adults while the youngsters try out ultrasound scanning, and see what their favourite sweets look like in an MRI scanner.

Children will have the chance to find out how much sugar is in juice, using a glucose meter to work out just how much sugar is in popular soft drinks.

Visitors will be challenged to guess how many genes we have and how this compares with some plants and animals, as well as playing a card game to find out why some people have allergies.

Elaine Holland, manager of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We often take medical care for granted and don’t think about the complex science that’s behind healthcare, so this is a fun way to encourage visitors to the centre to get involved and find out more.

“With something for everyone, Meet the Scientist 2019 is set to be a great day, with lots of hands-on activities throughout the day.” ‍

The usual entry fees apply on November 9.

Aberdeen Science Centre is currently based at 107 George Street while the centre undergoes a multi-million-pound redevelopment.

The revamped centre is due to reopen in summer 2020, with Bancon Construction carrying out works at The Tramsheds on Constitution Street.

The centre’s redevelopment includes an extension and creation of a new mezzanine floor – almost doubling the exhibition space – and exposing the roof structure to allow natural light to flood into the building.

The £4.7 million redevelopment has been made possible by support and funding from the Inspiring Science Fund – a partnership between the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Wellcome.

Additional support has been granted by Opportunity North East (ONE) and Aberdeen City Council.
