Aberdeen Science Centre, in partnership with Shell, is taking part in the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Engineering Open House Day on Saturday July 30. This free event is part of the IET’s Engineer a Better World campaign which showcases the exciting engineering career opportunities that are open to young people.
Research from the IET* in 2015 highlighted that more than two thirds (71%) of children say they would be interested in an engineering career when shown inspirational information about the creativity and breadth of opportunities available. These aspects of engineering will be key features of Engineering Open House Day.
Liz Hodge, chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to host an event, in partnership with Shell, for the IET’s Engineering Open House Day. It will be a great opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic opportunities that a job in the engineering sector can offer and to inspire the next generation of engineers. It’s an honour to collaborate with the IET for the events’ inaugural year in Scotland. Engineering Open House Day is a truly great initiative which we hope it will inspire and encourage a diverse mix of children to consider a career in this field.”
Naomi Climer, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET):
“Many parents, particularly those with daughters, aren’t aware of how many different types of engineering jobs there are – and that these jobs can be creative, rewarding, and make a real difference to people’s lives. Engineering Open House Day is a great way to show parents and young people the diverse variety of exciting engineering careers on offer all over the country, while also celebrating the valuable work that engineers do every day.”
In addition to the usual interactive exhibits there will be lots to inspire visitors to the wonders of Engineering. There will be presentations to see, workshops to sign up for and do it yourself drop in activities.
Partners involved include Shell, Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, Robert Gordon Univeristy (RGU), Geobus, Institute of Physics (IOP), Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) offering visitors the opportunity to make their own wind turbine, build a salt water powered car, design a bridge and drive an ROV.
Presentation topics include
- “Is Engineering for me?”: an interactive presentation about engineering and the different routes young people can take
- “A Day in the Life of a Reservoir Engineer”: hear all about a typical day, if there is such thing(!), working as a Reservoir Engineer in the Petroleum Industry
