Aberdeen Football Club has withdrawn its bid for a temporary alcohol licence for a trail pre-match fan zone.

The application for an occasional licence had been lodged with Aberdeen City Council to hold an event outside Pittodrie Stadium before the St Johnstone match on Saturday, December 7.

The plans would have allowed alcohol between 12pm and 14.45pm, prior to kick-off and Dons fans would have been invited to claim a free ticket for the fan zone through the club's ticketing platform.

Aberdeen City Council confirmed in a statement that the licensing bid had been pulled.

"The application has now been withdrawn," a spokesperson said.

The trail was set to launch in partnership with local brewers Fierce Beer, who have previously collaborated with the football club.

Alcohol has been banned at Scottish Football grounds since 1980, following a riot at Hampden Park which prompted the ban.

However, the proposed bid was aiming to improve fan engagement and match day experiences for supporters.

Despite alcohol consumption allowed at other sporting events including Rugby, a Scottish government spokesperson said there are "no plans to change the ban on alcohol sales at Scottish football grounds."
