Aberdeen’s creative community has come together to provide access to the arts on Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17).

Aberdeen Arts Centre has joined forces with the local performing community and touring companies to provide 76 tickets to shows for families in need in Aberdeen.

Tickets have been provided free-of-charge for seven upcoming productions at Aberdeen Arts Centre this year – including the venue’s 2025 pantomime, Robin Hood.

The tickets will be distributed by both Aberdeen City Council’s Family Learning team and Tillydrone Community Campus SCIO.

Aberdeen Arts Centre’s creative director Amy Liptrott said: “The arts have the power to inspire, to bring people together, and to heal. But sadly, and more frequently in the current cost of living crisis, not everyone has the opportunity to take advantage of these benefits.

“We are so proud to have teamed up with members of our brilliant local performing community and touring companies to provide access to live theatre, music and dance performances for those that may otherwise not be able to join us.

“At a time when theatre companies are feeling the pinch, I am so thankful and grateful for their generosity to help people in our community.”

Tickets have been provided by Aberdeen College of Performing Arts, Aberdeen Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Citymoves Dance Agency, Natalie Tough School of Dance, and Aberdeen Arts Centre. Touring artists Dean Friedman and Artie’s Singing Kettle have also contributed tickets to their upcoming shows.

Angela Grainger from Aberdeen City Council’s Family Learning team said: “Thank you so much to Aberdeen Arts Centre for providing Family Learning with a variety of theatre tickets for us to distribute to families who might otherwise not be able to experience the theatre. Many families went to the pantomime and had a fantastic evening.

“The Random Act of Kindness Day tickets will ensure more families get to experience the theatre in the coming year. It may even inspire a young person to want to find a career in the arts.”

Marie Strang, project coordinator at Tillydrone Community Campus, added: “We are happy to have been gifted tickets to some of Aberdeen Art Centre’s upcoming events. We can’t wait to share them with the residents of Tillydrone and allow families in the area the opportunity to attend the Arts Centre shows, some maybe for the first time! This is a fantastic opportunity to help make the arts accessible.”

Aberdeen Arts Centre is an independent arts venue and registered charity in the heart of Aberdeen. For over 60 years, it has played a crucial role in the north east’s vibrant arts scene through its programme of performances, Creative Learning Programme for children and adults, and an Artist Development Programme to support local professional creatives.

The venue encompasses a 350-seater auditorium; café bar; flexible spaces for performances, events, exhibitions and meetings; and the Children’s Theatre, opened in the 1950s as a pioneering youth theatre and now used as a vital resource for professional artist development.
