Aberdeen Altens Hotel hops to it to launch nationwide fund-raising relay in aid of cancer charity

Bunny mascot will touch down in Aberdeen by helicopter after night on oil rig.

Staff from The Aberdeen Altens Hotel have welcomed a VIP guest – a toy rabbit arrived by helicopter from a North Sea oil rig on the first leg of an epic fund-raising journey across the UK.

The rabbit – aptly named Bunny – will be travelling 1,200 miles by air, road and rail – as well as by foot – from Aberdeen to Brighton over the course of the next 12 days.

The mascot will visit all properties owned by The Hotel Collection to raise £12,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The mascot touched down in the Granite City thanks to Bristow Helicopters after spending a few days being looked after by staff on an offshore oil rig.

Bunny was whisked off to the hotel by car, and will start the first leg of his journey to Stirling in style in a BMW convertible courtesy of John Clark, on Tuesday (June 28).

Kris Manship, general manager of The Aberdeen Altens Hotel, says staff were keen to ensure Bunny got his tour of the UK off to the best possible start.

He adds, “The Bunny Run was developed as an opportunity for hotels across The Hotel Collection to come together and do something collectively for a very worthy cause.

“We were set the challenge of being as inventive as possible in working out how we got the bunny from A to B, and the team here in Aberdeen had some really impressive ideas.

“Some hotels are transporting the bunny by bicycle and by car and he will even be doing part of the journey on board The Big One rollercoaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, but I think Bunny’s helicopter trip has to be the most spectacular.

“During his time with us, Bunny visited lots of local attractions, including a Northlink ferry, and had his photograph taken so he could post them on social media.

“We wanted to show that Aberdeen is a fantastic location for a fun family holiday this summer – although not everyone will get the chance to visit a North Sea oil rig.”

In addition to arranging the rabbit’s transport, staff from The Aberdeen Altens Hotel organised a quiz night to help generate additional funds for The Bunny Run.

Peter Manby, managing director of The Hotel Collection, says, “It goes without saying that I am immensely proud of everyone who has got involved, whether participating or donating, to help us raise much-needed funds for Cancer Research UK. The work they do is paramount to finding a cure for cancer.”
