3d printing - getting ahead and staying there
Date: Tuesday November 15
Time: 9.00am-12.00pm
Venue: Electra Learning, Original House, Craigshaw Road, West Tullos, Aberdeen, AB12 3AR
Many oil and gas organisations don't think of Additive Manufacturing (known by the media as 3d printing) as having industrial applications, but with NASA, Formula 1, Boeing and GE etc spending billions on the technology, it's clear that there's value to be found. Additive manufacturing is not here to create simple geometries which are already cost-effective - it's here for when the delays / weight reduction / part-consolidation it offers outweighs the cost of experiencing those problems. Our oil and gas industry suffers every day from these problems which cost millions every year to service or overcome.
In conjunction with Electra Learning, Form 3D Services are hosting a free and informal seminar on how additive manufacturing can add value to engineering operations, and what needs to be done on a corporate / process level in order to allow this to happen.
We will use examples from within and outwith the O&G sector in order to add context to the discussions, and detail the step-change adopted by an Aberdeen downhole tooling company which has set them apart from their competition. In the words of their engineer "...it couldn't have been made any other way..."
There will also be a guest speaker on the subject of photo-grammetry, which is being widely used take place of expensive laser scanning operations. Details of an ongoing project in West Africa will also be offered.
Some further points include;
- The many topside and non-corrosive applications to which AM can offer value today.
- Case studies \ projects where fast reaction spares alone have offered the opportunity to save millions of pounds.
- Why engineers are still tackling day-to-day problems in the traditional manner, not knowing if AM offers a real alternative or offers better value
- Part consolidation - reducing number of sub-assy's in mechanical systems
- Value based weight reduction - how can lighter kit save money and speed of delivery?
- Fast reaction spares
- Why AM offers design freedom
- When to use it AM, and when to avoid it
- The AM design paradox
- Client case-studies
- Take-away points and action plan suggestions at board level
