King Size Recycling is a family run bed and mattress recycling company. At present we are the only ones in Scotland who manually deconstruct a mattress. Our aim is to recycle 100% of the mattresses we receive supporting a full circular economy.
We are an exciting new business set up early this year (February 2021), when we noticed it was becoming increasingly difficult to dispose of mattresses that had reached their end of life. We have worked in the waste industry for over 25 years. We were seeing them stockpiled in waste facilities waiting to go to landfill or fly tipped at the side of roads, lying in gardens and lanes.
Our process follows the principles of full circular economy. It involves hand stripping the mattress layer by layer and separating the materials which we bale and distribute into other industries who re-manufacture by processes: Foam will be chipped and made into underlay and insulation. Polyester, shoddy, wool, and other insulators are sent to be needled which is a cleaning process and made into new rolls which can be used for stuffing, padding, or flooring underlay. Wood is chipped for kitchen units, worktops, laminate flooring etc. Springs are scrap metal and the outer skins of a mattress can be shredded and used for biofuel Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) as it has a high calorific value.
We are currently working with Jaco Aberdeen couriers who are proving to be a very efficient and a reliable service to bed retailers in the Northeast. These include Duncan’s of Banchory, Ewen & Co, Fergusons Furniture, Forty Winks, Frasers of Ellon, Grampian Furnishers, Millers of Carnoustie and Taylors of Banchory.
All mattresses must be dry because if they are wet or contaminated, we are unable to recycle them by the deconstruction method, therefore the materials cannot be sent for further processing.
Mattress recycling is very successful in other countries and we hope we can help lead Scotland into a nation who thinks carefully before throwing away their old bed. Ask yourself “Can it be reused (friends, family, charity) or repaired?” If not then for a small Gate Fee King Size Recycling will ensure your old bed does not add to the landfill crises, working towards a sustainable future.
