In recent years the conversation around our global energy future has been centred on a transition, but from where I stand, it's an addition.

Renewables are absolutely vital for a sustainable future but at the same time, global demand for oil and gas remains. This demand isn’t going anywhere soon and that’s why I believe it’s not a case of replacing one with the other, but of adopting an energy addition mindset - building a more resilient, secure and balanced energy mix.

At Apex Tubulars, we’ve seen first-hand how the energy landscape has changed, particularly in the North Sea. While there’s been progress in renewable infrastructure, the continued global need for oil and gas is undeniable. From our side, as long as there’s demand for our products, we’ll continue to supply them, both responsibly and sustainably.

I use the term energy addition because that’s exactly what we’re seeing, the integration of new technologies and sources without abandoning the essential ones we already rely on. Alongside traditional oil and gas production, we're supporting clients in areas like gas storage, geothermal and more recently, carbon capture wells - all of which require casing and tubing, our specialist products.

We’re proud of the part we play in enabling this balanced approach but we also understand that supplying to this sector comes with responsibility. That’s why sustainability is embedded in how we operate. We’ve transitioned to a paperless office, installed sensor-controlled LED lighting, and we’re proud River Dee Guardians actively taking part in tree planting and biodiversity restoration projects in our local area. These aren't just tick-box exercises, they’re actions we believe in and encourage others to take part in too.

The energy industry is evolving and innovation is driving improvements in both sustainability and efficiency. One of our clients, for example, has recently invested in converting its platform and drilling rig to run on electricity powered by offshore wind. This is a clear sign of what’s possible when we embrace progress across the full spectrum of energy sources.

Investors, consumers and regulators are all calling for stronger sustainability commitments and rightly so, but this push toward a greener future must be realistic. Continued investment in fossil fuel production is still necessary, even as we scale up lower-carbon solutions like geothermal and carbon capture. Striking that balance is where the challenge lies.

The biggest barrier to this idea of an energy addition is public perception and people often don’t know what to believe. We all have a role to play in educating, acting responsibly and in doing our part.

Apex is still in the early stages of supporting renewable development, but we’re committed to growth in this space. With time, experience and collaboration, we’ll continue to improve and help deliver more efficient, lower-cost and environmentally conscious energy solutions.

We’re proud to be part of this evolving industry and we’ll keep doing our part to support both today’s needs and tomorrow’s ambitions.
