As a classroom teacher, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing the growth and development of our pupils in a nurturing, positive learning environment where every voice is heard. A key factor that enhances their learning experience is class size. There can be a common perception that smaller class sizes always lead to better education outcomes, but the real benefit lies in finding the right balance.
Our Junior School classes typically have around 18-20 pupils, creating an ideal balance for one-to-one interactions while supporting social development during these important years. This allows children to form friendships through genuine connections with like-minded peers, collaborate effectively, engage in meaningful learning conversations, and develop independent learning skills. Pupils achieve their best learning outcomes when they can work together to engage in thoughtful discussions.
In a class of this size, pupil engagement and behaviour are excellent, and the classroom atmosphere remains calm and settled. Every learner feels safe, valued and supported. We take the time to get to know each child individually, celebrate their successes, and set personalised next steps that are meaningful to them, extending and challenging them to reach their full potential.
When a class becomes too small, it can present challenges for both pupils and teachers. It may limit the diversity of ideas and perspectives essential for dynamic learning and rich discussion, which can lead to children feeling isolated or too similar to one another. A broader mix of pupils creates more opportunities to develop listening and talking skills, peer collaboration, and exposure to a wider range of opinions. While a teacher may have more one-on-one time with each pupil, this can result in an overly teacher centred environment, where pupils may lack social interaction and reduce opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving skills through group dynamics. A class of optimal size allows for a good balance of individual characters and is the perfect environment for positive, secure friendships to blossom and grow.
In larger classes, academically strong pupils can sometimes get lost in the group. In contrast, a smaller class allows us to spend more time with each child, providing additional opportunities to engage more frequently with families and strengthen that vital home-school link.
One standout feature of our classrooms is the horseshoe arrangement of desks, which promotes eye contact between pupils and staff, encouraging open dialogue. This setup facilitates real-time verbal feedback, allowing pupils to actively engage in conversations about their learning and immediately act on next steps with teacher support when needed. It is hugely beneficial for teamwork, as it facilitates cooperative learning tasks, developing essential collaboration skills. I can easily pull up a chair to engage with groups without hovering over them, creating a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere for learning. The spacious design gives teachers flexibility when planning engaging activities that support classroom learning.
Many of our classrooms are separated by a partition wall, allowing year groups to join together for workshops, special events, house-related activities or to welcome guest speakers. The bright, high windows let in plenty of natural light, making the classroom feel warm and welcoming without the distractions that can come from open-plan designs. We enjoy having the opportunity to ‘team teach’ when the partition doors are open, and the small class sizes allow us to combine classes in a meaningful, calm, and impactful way.
The calm corridors and lively playground also contribute to a positive environment, offering both structured and less structured opportunities for learning and play. The corridors provide a peaceful transition space between activities, while the playground, filled with laughter and joy, promotes a sense of community and belonging. Playground Supervisors play an essential role in supporting pupils, ensuring a safe, welcoming space where they can interact, develop social skills, and enjoy active play.
When prospective families tour our school, the feedback on our classroom setup is overwhelmingly positive. Visitors frequently comment on the horseshoe tables, the brightness of the rooms, and the use of glass in our design, which helps to create an atmosphere of warmth and support. This thoughtful design underscores the one-to-one support our pupils receive and reinforces the positive learning environment we strive to maintain.
The value of the right class size cannot be overstated, but the true benefits come when we find that optimal range. By creating an environment where pupils can thrive academically and socially, we set the stage for a positive learning experience that lasts a lifetime. When pupils feel connected, engaged, and heard, they are more likely to succeed - both in the classroom and beyond.
