At a time when businesses across sectors are facing skills shortages and young people are navigating an ever-evolving job market, work readiness has never been more crucial.

Employers consistently highlight the need for young hires to possess not only technical skills for their roles but also essential soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, and adaptability. However, research shows a persistent gap between employer expectations and the skills young people bring to the workplace.

Developing the Young Workforce North East (DYWNE) is committed to supporting young people in developing the skills, confidence, and experience they need to transition successfully into the workforce. In 2022, DYWNE and DYW Moray commissioned Research Chamber, part of Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, to conduct an in-depth study—Positive Futures—exploring pathways to work, available support, and engagement between businesses and the next generation of employees.

Through extensive engagement with employers and young people, Research Chamber gathered data-driven insights to help bridge the gap between employers, educators, and young people. The research identified key challenges young people face when entering the workforce and the barriers employers encounter in recruitment. These findings provided DYWNE and DYW Moray with a clearer understanding of these issues, informing future planning and support initiatives.

Building on the Positive Futures Project, we are now conducting a Work Readiness Research initiative for DYWNE to better understand the challenges and expectations employers have when hiring young talent. Your feedback will directly inform how businesses, educators, and policymakers collaborate to enhance youth employability.
