Engineering is about innovation, dedication and tackling challenges head-on – values we champion every day at JBS.

It’s a career that challenges you to think critically, collaborate effectively and make a tangible impact.

At JBS, we see this every day in our projects, whether it’s developing patented Sea Axe excavation technology, implementing safety-focused blast containment systems or addressing sustainability challenges.

Yet, the industry faces a pressing need: to attract and inspire the next generation to embrace engineering as a rewarding career path.

That’s why we’re so passionate about the Peterhead Academy Learning Partnership, developed in collaboration with Aberdeenshire Council.

This initiative gives pupils hands-on experience in engineering and insight into the exciting opportunities the industry offers.

Over the past eight weeks, 10 Peterhead Academy pupils have joined us at our South View facility to work with JBS and our sister company, AM Campbell Electricians. Together, they have designed and built a fully operational screw conveyor.

It’s a practical project that introduces them to the engineering process - from concept to completion - while developing their problem-solving and teamwork skills.

EngineeringUK’s latest report highlights that the UK needs 124,000 engineers and technicians annually to meet demand. It also reveals that young people’s awareness of engineering careers remains limited.

By giving pupils real-world experience, we aim to break down these barriers and show them how engineering can be a dynamic and exciting career, one that could even take them around the globe.

At JBS, we believe that innovation and sustainability are integral to the future of engineering. Whether it’s developing Sea Axe technology that leads the industry in efficiency or creating safety systems that protect lives, our work demonstrates the value of thinking creatively and solving complex problems. For these pupils, seeing this in action is both motivating and inspiring.

Beyond technical expertise, engineering offers global opportunities. Whether it’s working on offshore platforms, contributing to sustainability goals, or developing cutting-edge technologies, engineers are solving problems that span borders.

The school project concluded with a celebratory ‘big switch-on’ attended by parents, and we are delighted to see how much everyone appreciated the practical learning experience.

Our teams thoroughly enjoyed sharing their knowledge with the pupils, who were engaged, committed and a pleasure to work with.

It is set to become an annual event, and we are already looking forward to welcoming the next intake of pupils. We aim to build a long-standing relationship with Peterhead Academy.

This is more than just a side project for us – it’s about inspiring future generations to carry forward the legacy of innovation, sustainability and problem-solving that defines engineering – a skillset that has been so important in the North-east of Scotland over the years.

At JBS, we’re committed to not just solving today’s problems but inspiring the problem-solvers of tomorrow.
